Gastric Sleeve Surgery (VSG)
What is the Gastric Sleeve or Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy?
The Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy also known as Gastric Sleeve Surgery, is a restrictive weight loss procedure that promotes weight reduction by constraining the amount of nourishment admission by the stomach.
Often called the sleeve – this procedure is performed by Dr. Verboonen by removing approximately 80% of your stomach. The remaining portion of your stomach is a tubular pouch with a similar shape of a banana.
First introduced in 1988 as a the restrictive part of a weight loss surgery to treat morbid and super morbid obesity called biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal witch (BPD-S). Since 2012, once this procedure was recognized as a stand alone weight loss option by the ASMBS, Dr. Sergio Verboonen has performed over 10,000 gastric sleeve surgeries. Thanks to a 20 year trajectory, Dr. Verboonen has further refined the surgical process to improve the patients recuperation while greatly reducing the potential of risk.

What Happens During the Gastric Sleeve Procedure
You will be given general anesthesia for this surgery.
- A small incision will be made in your abdominal area. Your stomach will then be reshaped.
- A part of your stomach will be taken out, and your stomach will be reshaped into a tube.
- This weight loss option can reduce up to 85 percent of your stomach.
- Your newly reduced sized stomach will be stapled and your incisions are closed.
Your new, smaller stomach will still be able to absorb all the nutrients you need as your food is digested.
You’ll also have a lesser chance of infections or complications developing from this surgery due to the small incisions made during the process.
The Benefits of Having Gastric Sleeve Surgery
A wide variety of advantages come with having the gastric sleeve procedure, including:
- Fast weight loss.
- Causes great changes in gut hormones that smother hunger, diminish craving and enhance satiety
- Short stay at the clinic – you will be discharged approximately two days after surgery
- Patients report that they are less hungry after the surgery than they were before because their stomach is smaller. The part of your stomach that produces Ghrelin, which is the hunger hormone, will be removed during the surgery.
- This surgery is safer than many other weight loss treatments. Your intestines will remain intact, and no foreign objects are placed in your body.
- The procedure is revisable. Some people stretch their stomach back out if they don’t commit to losing weight and exercising. One of our certified bariatric professionals can retighten the stomach if it becomes stretched out.
